This powerful course has spread to every state and territory of Australia and is now acclaimed internationally.

The 2 day course is designed to give workers without clinical training some skills to help someone developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis situation. The philosophy behind the course is that mental health crises, such as suicidal and self-harming actions, may be avoided through early intervention. If crises do arise, then members of the public can take action to reduce the harm that could result.

Awards won by the Mental Health First Aid Program

The MHFA program was developed in 2001 at the Centre for Mental Health Research at the Australian National University by academics Betty Kitchener and Professor Tony Jorm. Since 2005, the MHFA program has been auspiced by the ORYGEN Research Centre at the University of Melbourne.

Over the past 5 years, the Mental Health First Aid program has won several awards, the most recent being for “Excellence in Mental Health Education” from the National Council for Behavioral Healthcare, USA, 2008.

The course covers the following:

  • Introduction to common mental illnesses
  • Crisis first aid skills
  • Ongoing first aid skills for all common mental illnesses
  • How to identify warning signs
  • How to address difficult situations
  • How and where to get the right help

The Adult MHFA Course is highly recommended for supervisors, managers and Human Resource staff. Counsellors and personnel in social and health services or in education will find it invaluable, as will individuals wishing to extend their general First Aid knowledge.
